The World in the 20th Century

What can a photograph teach us about history? What does it reveal and what does it conceal? This course offers an introduction to 20th-century world history through the lens of photography. Organized thematically, it explores major historical developments of the century, including war and genocide, empire and decolonization, dictatorship and resistance. Each module centers on a specific theme and draws from case studies that span the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Ancient Civilization

This course covers the rise of key ancient civilizations in the Near East and the Mediterranean. From the Mesopotamians and Egyptians to the Greeks and Romans, students will learn about the people whose mythology, architecture, and power continue to capture our imaginations in the modern world. How did these people understand their own history and why did history unfold in certain ways? Students will explore these questions through the writings these cultures left behind.

The Vietnam War

HIST-A380 with Instructor Martinez-Alvarenga

This course examines the Vietnam War as both a global conflict and a defining moment in modern history. Beginning with Vietnam’s colonial past and the rise of nationalism, we trace how the country became central to Cold War tensions and U.S. foreign policy. Through movies, documentaries, firsthand accounts, news coverage, and policy documents, students will explore why the U.S. intervened, how the war affected those who fought and those at home, and how public opinion evolved. We will study key turning points such as Dien Bien Phu, the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the Tet Offensive, My Lai, and the fall of Saigon, while also considering the war’s long-term impact on national memory and world affairs. Watching and discussing films will be a central part of the course, offering insight into how different people understood and remembered the conflict.
