
The World in the 20th Century

What can a photograph teach us about history? What does it reveal and what does it conceal? This course offers an introduction to 20th-century world history through the lens of photography. Organized thematically, it explores major historical developments of the century, including war and genocide, empire and decolonization, dictatorship and resistance. Each module centers on a specific theme and draws from case studies that span the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Europe.
