The World in the 20th Century to 1945

Momentous changes in the early twentieth century affected people all over the world and laid the groundwork for much of the human experience today. We will consider themes like industrialism, colonialism, gender, racism, nationalism, fascism, socialism and war. Students will learn to interpret evidence and form arguments. The Making of Modern Russia

Let’s examine one of the world’s greatest empires! We look at late Imperial Russia, the Russian Revolution and Stalinism; the emergence, evolution and final collapse of the Soviet Union. World War One is not only the seminal event of 20th century Europe, an Ur-catastrophe, but also a shattering and revolutionary moment around the globe. Introduction to Native American History

Through six hundred generations of life in North America, Native Americans adapted their economies and societies to environmental and technological change, developed strategies to survive displacement and demographic decline, and fought to preserve their peoples' identities and sovereignty. Students in A207 will explore these struggles and innovations through short lectures incorporating both historical and anthropological insights; reading assignments that include Native peoples' own words; and discussions, short written assignments, and analytical essays.

Modern Middle East

How did capitalism and nationalism spread in the Middle East? What was the relationship between the West and the Middle East in the 19th century? What about the impact of both World Wars? The Black Death

The bubonic plague has forced people all over the world to grapple with death, and the bacteria that caused these outbreaks is still with us today. From the sixth-century medieval Mediterranean world to 20th century Hawaii, we'll see how cultural similarities and differences shape plague response in art, written sources, clothing, and medical theory developed during plague outbreaks. As we work, we'll use a modern historian's tool box that includes ancient primary sources and big-data analysis to explore the limits of what we can understand about the Black Death's past.

Social History of War

“War? What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.” Whether or not we agree with the opening line of Edwin Starr’s 1969 hit song, war has been a common event in human history. This course will explore the social and political institutions that determined which wars were fought, and the social and cultural expectations brought people from particular social groups to the battlefields and shaped their behavior there in a number of wars from ancient Greece and China to the American Civil War to current wars.

Race and Ethnicity in American History

What is “race”? And how is it different from “ethnicity”? If race has no biological or genetic basis, when did these ideas emerge and why do they remain so important to us today? In this class, we’ll examine key moments in the history of race and ethnicity in the United States in order to understand how these ideas have become such a powerful force in modern American culture and politics. We will consider how definitions of race change over time, differ from place to place, and are reproduced despite their inherent contradictions. In doing so, we will explore the contested meanings of freedom, citizenship, sovereignty, justice, and civil rights in American history.

Introduction to the History of Disability in the United States

HIST-A300 with Professor Benjamin Irvin

Disability changes over time and in relation to the specific societies in which it is embedded. In this seminar, we explore disability as it has pertained to a variety of institutions, eras, and events in U.S. history, including slavery, immigration, World Wars I and II, and the Great Depression. We examine phenomena that have particularly shaped disability in the United States, including the birth of the asylum, the rise and fall of eugenic science, and modern campaigns for veterans’ health care. Recurring themes include the distinction between disability and impairment; the relationship between disability and race, class, and gender; and the interplay between disability and capitalist ideologies of labor.

Black Power in America

The Black Power Movement's impact on recent social and political movements and entities. Moreover, the course explores the Black Power’s impact on the changing American socio-economic landscape and how the movement affected politics of liberation in America. What does the notion of liberation or freedom mean to different generations of activists and communities in African American life? How has heightened awareness of intra-racial differences--class, gender, sexuality and regional habitat--affected group consensus and debate on a range of issues pertinent to the Black experience? US Foreign Relations in the American Century

This course is about the practice of history. In your preliminary courses, you were concerned with learning themes and topics in history, but in J300 your goal is to learn how to be a historian. Specifically, we will study the techniques and skills of writing the history of twentieth century U.S. foreign relations. Flood, Fire, Quakes, and Plague: History can turn on a dime, suddenly and dramatically. What is the history of natural disasters? Who benefits from them, and who suffers? How has history been illustrated, reinvented, fantasized, or manipulated in the China’s vibrant popular culture, such as martial arts novels, soap operas, graphic books, and theme parks? In this seminar, we will explore the complex interplays of history, nationalism, and popular culture in modern China. By reading leading scholarly work on popular culture, nationalism, and media in modern Chinese history, along with a few case studies, we will learn the analytical frameworks and tools to critically analyze the popular (re)creation of history in China. Then students will practice and apply these frameworks and tools to develop their own case studies.

Slavery & Unfreedom in World HIstory

HIST-W300 with Professor Pedro Machado

Forms of slavery and ‘unfreedom’ have defined the human experience across the world. In addition to looking in detail at the development of plantation slavery in the Atlantic world, this course will explore the very different forms of slavery and ‘unfreedoms’ that existed in social, cultural, political and economic systems in the Indian Ocean and Pacific worlds, and that predated the Common Era. The course thus aims ultimately to problematize and challenge the view of slavery as constituted exclusively by the dichotomous categories of chattel/free.

Heroes and Villains in Russian History

We will look at Russian legendary rulers and revolutionaries, political leaders, intellectuals and explorers, traveling from the 13th century to the collapse of the Soviet Union, examining major themes in Russian history through the lives of colorful, controversial, mainly famous, but also obscure, individuals. We will analyze the myth-making process surrounding their lives to learn about politics of history, Russian society and its search for a “usable past”.

The Roman Empire

The Roman Empire forever altered the course of many Western European, North African, Mediterranean and Near Eastern societies. Remarkable transformations in labor, urbanization, politics and religion among other elements were witnessed from the first century A.D. through the end of the sixth century. Roman goods, coin and culture spread throughout the Mediterranean. Roman Polytheism gave way to monotheism, as Christianity became embedded in many of the cultures within the Roman world. This course will require each student to read between roughly 40-80 pages of reading per week. Students will be assessed via essays, a midterm and final exam, and in-class response questions.

Habsburg Empire, 1780-1918

You can’t find it on the map, but it started WWI and shaped your world! The Habsburg Empire in its last stage, the modernization of Central and Eastern Europe. Was it a prison of nations? Was it a wantonly ruined opportunity of liberal multiculturalism? Was it a doomed anachronism, or a unique modernizing state? The Habsburg Empire, with 50 million of people of diverse cultures and a dozen official languages, looked uncannily like an EU before the EU in both its problems and promises. Or, perhaps, as Arthur Schnitzler suggested, it was just “a laboratory for world destruction?”

History of Genocide

Genocide is not the violent clash of professional or volunteer armies, but the extermination by the powerful of the powerless. This course asks what in different times and places has driven leaders, states and groups to pursue such horrific policies. Is there something in the nature of the modern world that makes genocide thinkable, even attractive? How does the Holocaust relate to other genocides? What is it like to be the victim – and or the survivor - of genocidal regimes? Readings are taken from: Naimark, Genocide : A World History. The New Oxford World History. Modern Central American History

THE CIVIL WARS OF CENTRAL AMERICA: ORIGINS, BATTLES, AND COSTS. Some 300,000 civilians died during the civil wars in Central America of the 1980s. The United States government was deeply involved in those wars and the media highlighted them constantly. Yet, today Central America is at most an afterthought for policy makers and the media. The legacy of that period, however, weighs heavily on the peoples of the region and continues to have a strong impact on the United States through massive immigration, a direct and indirect result of the Civil Wars.

History of Cuba and Puerto Rico

Late 19th-century Puerto Rican poet Lola Rodríguez de Tió once wrote that “Cuba and Puerto Rico are the two wings of the same bird.” Both islands share a similar culture and have comparable historical developments, yet, today, they live very different realities: Cuba is the only socialist republic in the hemisphere while Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States. What explains these differences if their histories are apparently so similar? The course will explore these issues through the study of key historical processes from first inhabitation through the present, giving particular attention to the 19th and 21st centuries.

Why does the decade that tore apart post-World War II America serve as both an inspirational story of democratic empowerment and a dark tale of violence and decline? This course provides an overview of Chinese history in the period 755-1850. The Evolution/Creation Controversy

Nearly a century after the historic 1925 Scopes “Monkey” Trial about the teaching of evolutionary science in public schools, the issue refuses to go away. Millions watched online as Bill Nye “the science guy” debated evolution with Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis. Evolutionary scientists have accumulated a vast amount of evidence for evolution, which is now the bedrock of modern biology. Why does the controversy persist? How has it evolved over the past century? Why do people care so much about this issue? How can it be resolved? This course will explore these questions and more through readings, films, discussions, and field trips.

Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire

What happened to the Roman Empire? Did it "decline and fall," or was it transformed into new political and cultural entities? Did people at the time think that it was "falling"? Engaging with secondary scholarship, travel literature, ads, music, poetry, film, and more, we will examine when, where, how, and why particular stereotypes about Black women were created, and by whom. We will also discuss how Black women have grappled with race, class, gender and sexuality, struggling to create lives and images that reflect their own understanding of liberty, power, equality, rights, citizenship, and self. Instead of attempting to understand all of Black women’s history, or every image that exists in the US context, we will focus on interrogating certain images more closely than others. This class is thus organized thematically, not chronologically, and is not meant to be an exhaustive examination of Black Women’s History.

Revolutions and Counterrevolutions

HIST-J400 with Professor Jeffrey Gould

How do revolutionary movements, and their counter-revolutionary responses, shape our understanding of modenr history? This course's primary aim is to aid students to research and write historical research papers, with a focus on revolutions and counterrevolutions. The first two weeks will be devoted to a discussion of the classic, Homage to Catalonia, and the related themes of civil war, social revolution, and reaction. The class readings will then focus on the impact and relationship between the Cold War and Latin American revolutionary movements during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. They will address several questions: What were the goals of modern revolutionary movements? What role did the United States play in fomenting counterrevolutionary responses to the revolutionary movements?

Prostitution and Gender

HIST-J400 with Professor Julia Roos

By focusing on the problem of prostitution, this course explores how gender history can shed new light on important broader aspects of past societies such as: class and gender relations, race and racism, the state, the market, law, religion, and scientific beliefs. Students will develop their own research skills by engaging with a broad range of analytical approaches to the study of prostitution across different time periods and regions of the globe.

Capstone Seminar

HIST-J425 with Professor Arlene Díaz

This class will guide you through the process of producing your research project. Throughout the semester we will discuss topics such as how to frame a productive research question, how to build a preliminary bibliography, how to produce a good thesis statement, and how to organize the project logically. We will walk together through the process of doing the research and bringing your project to completion. I say –together- because I’ll be there, as a mentor and coach. By the end of the semester, you’ll have learned how to do systematic research, evaluate information, produce new knowledge, and present your work in writing, and/or visually, all of which are competencies that will be useful in most jobs you hold in the future.
