- The Romanian translation of Maria Bucur’s co-authored book, Birth of Democratic Citizenship (2018), will be launched tomorrow, November 22nd, at the Gaudeaumus International Book Fair in Bucharest, with a discussion of the book by Maria’s co-author Mihaela Miroiu.
- On November 9, Peter Guardino gave the keynote address for the Latin American and Caribbean Section of the Southern Historical Association in Louisville, KY. The title of his talk was “An Eminent Place among the Nations of the World: Comparing Mexico and the United States before 1846.” Later in the day he participated in a roundtable on “Revolutions and Nationhood in North America.” While in Louisville Peter also had a chance to have breakfast with our former colleagues, Christina Snyder and Jacob Lee.
- Graduate student Szabolcs László gave a presentation entitled “Rethinking Openness and Mobility in the Cold War: Negotiating Transnational Ties between Hungary and the U.S. (1960-1989)” at the international conference (Re)Thinking Socialism: Knowledge, Memory and Oblivion of the Socialist Past, organized by the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies, between 7–9 November in Sofia.
- Mark Roseman gave the 2019 Rosenthal lecture at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on "The secrets of solidarity: helping Jews in the Holocaust," November 13, 2019. The following day with the historian Peter Fritzsche he co-presented "Antisemitism: Historical Perspectives" at the University of Illinois.
- Jonathan Schlesinger presented “Always Already Global: On Finding Ivory in All the Wrong Places” at the History Department Seminar at Johns Hopkins University.
- Rebecca Spang presented “Aristotle, A.D. White, and the Tragedy of Money” at the symposium on “Poetics of Material Life” sponsored by the Princeton University Humanities Council.
- Fei-Hsien Wang presented her newly published book, Pirates and Publishers: A Social History of Copyright in Modern China, at the History and Economics Seminar at Harvard University on October 30 and at the David Lam Centre for International Communication at Simon Fraser University on November 15. On November 20, she participated as a commentator in the workshop "Law and Empire in the Sino-Asian Context" at Harvard Law School. On November 21, she serves as a panelist in the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Legal History discussing Philip Thai's monograph, China's War Against Smuggling. On November 25, she will present a paper entitled "A Posterchild Lost: The 'Modernization in China’ Project and the Changing Cold War Politics of Theory" in the workshop "Sinology in the Cold War," held at the IU Berlin Gateway Center.
