- John H. Hanson will be awarded the African Studies Association service award at this November’s annual ASA meeting. He is being recognized for a decade’s service as co-editor of History in Africa: A Journal of Debates, Methods, and Source Analysis, a scholarly journal published by Cambridge University Press. He will receive the award with his fellow co-editors: Dmitri van den Bersselaar (University of Leipzig), Michel Dortmont (University of Groningen), and Jan Jansen (Leiden University).
- The Italian translation of Carl Ipsen’s book on the history of smoking has just been published by Le Monnier: Fumo: La storia d’amore tra gli italiani e la sigaretta. It will be featured in an article in La Venerdì di Repubblica on November 8.
- Graduate Student Andrew Jacobs' article "The 1972 Soviet-American Youth Conference: The Illusion of Consensus" has been published in the Journal of Russian-American Studies 3.2 (November 2019): 163-184.
- Sarah Knott discussed Mother Is A Verb at the Chicago Humanities Festival last Saturday as well as at the Public Health seminar here on campus last week. She is now a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians.
- Marissa Moorman presented an invited talk “Angolan Radio in 5 Songs” at Duke University’s Concilium on Southern Africa on October 24, 2019.
- Eric Robinson gave a lecture at the Center for Hellenic Studies, University of California at San Diego, entitled “Cities on the Edge of War: Teaching Greek History through a Strategy Role-Playing Game” on October 30.
- On October 27, together with Günther Jikeli (Germanic Studies/Jewish Studies) Mark Roseman presented an afternoon session on antisemitism within the ViewPoints program series organized by the Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership in Chicago.
- Ph.D. student Connor Stangler was recently awarded the Harry Middleton Fellowship in Presidential Studies from the Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation to support scholarly work in presidential studies and to honor Mr. Middleton's contributions to the presidential library system.
