  • Former History PhD George T. Blakey, Jr., passed away October 9, 2017. The Professor Emeritus of History was granted tenure with IU East when the campus was established in July 1971. Previously, he taught American History at the Eastern Indiana Center of Earlham College and for Indiana University in 1967. He was the first faculty member at IU East to reach the rank of full professor. More information can be found here.
  • Ke-chin Hsia presented "'War Victims': Practical Concepts of Victimhood and Identity in the Early First Austrian Republic" as part of the panel Austrians as War Victims? Victimhood Discourses and Practices in the Age of World Wars, which he also organized, at the 41st Annual Conference of the German Studies Association in Atlanta, Georgia, on October 6, 2017.
  • Krista Maglen has been awarded an OVPIA Language Learning Grant to study Portuguese in Lisbon in the Spring semester so that in future she may undertake research in the Instituto Butantan in Sao Paolo.
  • IU Ph.D. Frank (Francis) Daniel McCann, Professor Emeritus, University of New Hampshire, is featured in this week's AHA Member Spotlight: http://blog.historians.org/2017/10/aha-member-spotlight-frank-francis-daniel-mccann/.
  • Kathleen Myers recently published Ni Santas ni Pecadoras: Mujeres, Vida y Escritura en Hispanoamérica Colonial. Trans. Pablo García Loaeza. Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, 2016. 311 pp. [Spanish Translation of Neither Saints nor Sinners, Oxford UP 2003.]
  • On September 27, Alex Rabinowitch gave a paper, "The Great Russian Revolution Revisited: Six Questions," at the plenary session of an international conference, "The Russian Revolution of 1917 and its Historical Footprint." This conference, held in Moscow, was organized by the National Committee of Russian historians. On October 9, Alex presented another research paper, "The Petrograd Bolsheviks and the All-Russian Constituent Assembly," at the plenary session of a second international conference in Moscow, "The Great Russian Revolution of 1917: 100 years of study. " This conference was organized by the Institute of Russian History, Russian Academy of Sciences.
  • Graduate student Sebastian Schulman was recently voted onto the Board of Directors of the American Literary Translators Association, serving as the chair of the Program Committee. In December, Sebastian will begin a new position as the Executive Director of KlezKanada, an organization based in Montreal devoted to Yiddish and Jewish arts and culture, music and literature.
  • Rebecca Spang recently presented "When Money Changes (and Why)" at "Death of the Dollar? Bullion, Banks, and Bitcoin," the fifth annual Cayman Investment Forum, sponsored by the CFA (Chartered Financial Advisors) of the Cayman Islands. On the following day, she participated in a panel discussion on "Debunking the Myths on Cryptocurrency" sponsored by 100 Women in Finance (also in Grand Cayman).
