- Cynthia Bannon won a Trustees Teaching Award in the At-Large Tenure Track Faculty competition.
- Graduate student Sarah Foss received a Center for Research on Race and Ethnicity Graduate Student Research Award.
- Jacob Lee presented a paper, "`I Barricade the River to Defeat the Enemy': Mobility and Power in the Illinois Country," at the annual meeting of the OAH.
- Michelle Moyd gave a keynote lecture entitled "Global South Modernities in World War I" as part of the Cultural Studies Annual Common Seminar Colloquium and Lecture Series at the University of Pittsburgh. The theme for the Common Seminar was "Modernity and Its Others."
- Christina Snyder spoke about her new book Great Crossings at the LA Times Festival of Books. She was also the 2017 Harrison Distinguished Lecturer at Western Kentucky University.
- On April 15, Fei-Hsien Wang participated in "Modern East Asian Law in Global Perspective" workshop at Columbia University and presented her paper entitled "Pirates' Law: Chinese Booksellers' Copyright Regime and its Foreign Copycat." She was also granted funding from Taiwan's Ministry of Education to develop her course HIST G200 "Issues in Asian History: Taiwan Between Empires" in Fall 2017 as part of IU's Taiwanese study program.
- The Washington Post produced a video, "The myth of the 'model minority,'" based in large part on Ellen Wu's The Color of Success. Ellen's research was also cited this week by Slate and NPR in rebuttals to Andrew Sullivan's comparison of Asian Americans and African Americans in New York magazine.
- Mirjam Zadoff has received Themester funding for a fall event on "Refugees, Art and Journalism", featuring two acclaimed graphic artists: British activist and artist Kate Evans, author of Threads: From the Refugee Crisis on the Calais Jungle Camp (published in June 2017) and American artist Sarah Glidden, author of Rolling Blackouts (2016) on Iraqi refugees in the Middle East before the Syrian civil war. This event is a co-operation of the Borns Jewish Studies Program, the Departments of History and International Studies, the Global Center, and the Media School.
