- For faculty who need help migrating from OnCourse to Canvas, CITL has several workshops called “Make the Move to Canvas” coming up. Kalani Craig will offer an abbreviated version of this workshop for history faculty and graduate students only on August 1 from 10a-noon. - History undergraduate Grace Boya Shen will be the IU Student Commencement Speaker on Saturday, May 10, 10 am, at the IU Memorial Stadium. Grace and Konstantin Dierks are recipients of the 2016 Provost’s Award for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity in the Humanities.
- Kalani Craig is the recipient of a 2016 Summer Instructional Development Fellowship for “Digital Encounters with the Past”, an undergraduate class that will focus on developing critical approaches to the use of big-data text and network analysis and spatial history techniques in service of history research projects.
- Graduate student Miguel Cruz Diaz has an article published in Counterpunch about the debt crisis in "Puerto Rico: a Junta By Any Other Name."
- Christopher Ferguson (PhD 2008) was tenured this Spring at Auburn University. Chris’s An Artisan Intellectual: James Carter and the Rise of Modern Britain, 1792-1853 will be out this December. During his time in the Department, Chris was a British/Atlantic Editorial Assistant at the American Historical Review as well as an avid member of the Center for 18th Century Studies.
- Brendan Gillis (PhD 2015) has been awarded a Hench Post-Dissertation Fellowship for a year at the American Antiquarian Society.
- Graduate student Stephanie Huezo is the recipient of the 2016 James R. Scobie Award from the Conference of Latin American History (CLAH).
- Carl Ipsen’s Fumo: Italy’s Love Affair with the Cigarette came out this week with Stanford University Press.
- Eden Medina delivered the keynote, "The Promise and Peril of Computer Technology in the Area of Human Rights," at the NYU conference Mistakes Were Made 2.0: Computer History Decompiled. She also delivered the talk, "Computers and Truth in Human Rights Cases: Lessons from History," at Yale Law School. Medina will join the editorial board of Hispanic American Historical Review in July 2016.
- Graduate student Samson Ndanyi is the recipient of the African Students Research Award 2016 to conduct two months of oral interviews in Kenya this summer for his dissertation project.
- Graduate student Jordan Taylor has been awarded a month-long McLean Contributionship Fellowship at Library Company of Philadelphia/Historical Society of Pennsylvania, for the study of the history of newspapers and their publishers.
