2024 History Award and Scholarship Winners

The Department of History offers many different scholarships and awards to our undergraduates every year. Meet some of the winners from 2024!

Rachel Bayler

Jacob and Lucy Listenfelt Memorial Scholarship

My time as a History major at Indiana University was one I will treasure always. Not only were the courses enriching and the faculty fantastic, being a History major challenged me to be a better student, better scholar, and better individual. I am especially grateful for having had the opportunity to complete and successfully defend an honors thesis with the wonderful guidance of Dr. Wendy Gamber. I take with me from my education in history lifelong critical thinking, research, and writing skills as well as a greater appreciation of how humans throughout history have sought to understand and shape this world. Special thanks to Dr. Gamber and Dr. Benjamin Irvin for being sources of inspiration and support throughout these last few years.

I declared my History major as a Freshman and am incredibly happy with what I have learned thus far. From courses about Cannibalism to the 1960's, I have enjoyed each class I attended. I am so grateful for the wonderful students and professors of the History Department, as they have all taught me so much.

Department of History Benefactor Scholarship

History at IU has been a highlight of my undergraduate experience. Each class pushes me to consider all angles, think creatively, and relish in my curiosity. Not to mention the wonderfully supportive peers and faculty whom I encounter in every course. Having History alongside my Political Science degree allows me to connect my understanding of the past to the nuances of contemporary issues. I am ecstatic to begin exploring my love of History further through History Honors work. My history education will be vital for pursuing law school. I cannot wait to enjoy all of what my degree has to offer!

Josephine Sparks

Department of History Benefactor Scholarship

I added history as a double major after taking a class titled Inside Nazi Germany, and it changed my experience at IU, and in life as a whole, in a big way. Not only have I gotten to learn more about history of the university I attend, the town I've grown up in, and the world at large, but this degree has led me to some of my most impactful courses, my favorite professors, and the study abroad experience I have been privileged to complete, studying History in Portugal and Italy. I am grateful that the opportunity to combine my two main interests, history and the environment, was available at IU and within this department, and I hope to use this intersection in a positive manner in whichever path life throws my way.
