2023 History Award and Scholarship Winners

The Department of History offers many different scholarships and awards to our undergraduates every year. Meet some of the winners from 2023!

Stephen Berck

Department of History Benefactor Scholarship & Study Abroad Scholarship

I have greatly enjoyed my time working with and learning from IU's amazing history department. In my two years so far, I have not only been able to learn about some fascinating people, places, and events in history, but also how to research and how to develop unique interpretations based on a plurality of evidence. I have especially enjoyed my courses covering ancient and classical history because of the great professors, interesting content, and challenges of studying such a distant period in time.

The best way I can describe my time as a History major is “an investment.” On the one hand, I’ve made an investment in this degree in hopes that it would set me up for a successful future. On the other hand, much more impressive is how the staff and faculty here have invested in me in return. You are never too young or inexperienced to succeed in this program. Even in my freshman year, my professor mentored me through publishing an editorial. I’ve been given the opportunity to work with museums, libraries, archives, and experts that genuinely believe in my capacity to do good work and support me through it. The Department of History has returned my investment tenfold. It’s a joy to get my degree here!

Department of History Benefactor Scholarship

Being a history major at IU has been one of the best parts of my undergraduate experience. I have been able to connect with outstanding professors and hardworking students that push me to learn more and see the world differently. From taking history classes abroad, to being accepted into the History Honors program I have fully taken advantage of all the opportunities the History department has to offer and will forever be changed by it. The History department has given me a way to make this big school feel smaller and surrounded by all welcoming faces. I love being able to be a part of such a unique and specialized program here. I will be able to use my degree in critical thinking and writing skills as I further my career in Museum Studies and Education.

Charles Raymond Stoltz Scholarship

While I didn’t start my undergraduate education as a history major, I am glad that I was able to pursue a variety of topics such as History of Epidemics or African History since 1800 just to name a couple. The topics covered and the professors who teach them are amazing and while I wasn’t always able to take every course that I found interesting, I was able to further my knowledge and understanding on a host of topics covering many time periods. Alongside the fantastic professors and classes I want to acknowledge History Advisor Peter Giordano who was always helpful and provided great insight and was influential in my pursuit of a certificate in the department of Folklore and Ethnomusicology alongside the History degree.

T. Edith Drane Scholarship

Being a History major has taught me to think flexibly, connect ideas, and create narratives that have overall improved my writing and communication abilities. Independently pursuing research and developing papers has allowed me to freely explore and choose topics that I'm passionate about and interested in, under the guidance of kind and encouraging professors. As someone who also had a concurrent STEM major, my history degree allowed me to remain connected with my interests in the humanities, and broaden my perspective beyond just my nonstop science classes. The skills I will take away from my work in history will be invaluable in my future career as a doctor, and I believe that the combination of these two fields of study has given me a unique experience. I have also loved the people that I've met throughout my time here and really appreciate the history community!
