- Lara Kriegel is the recipient of an Individual Research Award from the Institute for Advanced Study, for her project "Out of the Valley: The Crimean War and its Afterlife".
- Jason McGraw is the recipient of an Individual Research Award from the Institute for Advanced Study, for his project "A Social History of the Jamaican Popular Sound."
- A Department of History Wickes Fund for the Study of War and Society Award has been given to Michelle Moyd, to aid in her current project on World War I in Africa.
- Eric Robinson delivered the paper "Sparta's Reputation and American Popular Culture" at the meeting of the Midwestern Consortium of Ancient Greek Historians and Political Theorists held at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, October 29-30.
- Hessischer Rundfunk, the public radio station for the state of Hesse, interviewed Julia Roos on Friday, November 4, about her research on the Afro-German children of colonial French occupation soldiers branded "Rhineland bastards" and forcefully sterilized during the Third Reich.
- On November 5, in Chicago, Kaya Sahin attended a day-long meeting at the Newberry Library. The meeting brought together members of an advisory panel, who discussed ideas and artifacts for an exhibition scheduled to open at the Newberry in the fall of 2017: Religious Change and Print, 1450-1700.
- Ellen Wu is the recipient of an Individual Research Award from the Institute for Advanced Study, to support her project "Overrepresented: Asian Americans in the Age of Affirmative Action.
