Awards for Faculty, Alumni & Current Students

PhD student Szabolcs László has won this year's ASEEES Graduate Student Essay Prize for an outstanding essay by a graduate student in Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies, for his paper entitled: "Performing for the Capitalists: Cold War Cultural Diplomacy Experienced by Hungarian and Romanian Writers at the Iowa International Writing Program”.
Ph.D. student Samuel Fajerstein has won the 2018 REEI Daniel Armstrong Memorial Research Paper Award for his essay: “A Microprocess of Stalinization, 1928-1930: The Transformation of Puti sel’skogo khoziaistva and the “Army of Soviet Agronomists.”

Kalani Craig is the PI on Net.Create, a 2-year $300,000 NSF-funded grant that explores how network analysis can help improve undergraduate history reading comprehension.
Noam Zadoff's book Gershom Scholem: From Berlin to Jerusalem and Back received the 2018 Concordia University Azrieli Institute Award for Best Book in Israel Studies.
Leah Shopkow won The William and Edwyna Gilbert Award for the best article in a journal, magazine, or other serial on teaching history, for “How Many Sources Do I Need,” The History Teacher 50, no. 2 (February 2017).
Peter Guardino’s book, The Dead March: A History of the Mexican American War (Harvard University Press, 2017) was awarded the Western History Association’s Robert M. Utley Prize for the best book published on the military history of the frontier and western North America from prehistory through the twentieth century.

Barbara C. Allen, 2001 IU Ph.D. and Associate Professor of History at La Salle University, has published Leaflets of the Russian Revolution: Socialist Organizing in 1917 (Haymarket Books, 2018).
René Harder Horst, 1998 IU Ph.D., is the I.G. Greer Distinguished Professor in History 2018-2021 at Appalachian State University.

Faculty News

Distinguished Emeritus Professor of History Robert H. Ferrell died on August 8. We published a tribute written by our own Nick Cullather, one of Professor Ferrell's many students, in our August 30 newsletter. You'll also find an obituary by James Grant, another Ferrell student, in the Wall Street Journal and an obituary in the Aug. 22, 2018, edition of the New York Times.
Rebecca Spang is spending the 2018-2019 academic year as a Visiting Fellow at the International Center for Finance (Yale School of Management).
Micol Seigel's book, Violence Work: State Power and the Limits of Police, was published in August by Duke University Press.
Emeritus professor Larry Friedman keynoted an international conference on “Youth and Global Social Movements” at the University of the Azores Oct. 2-4.
Maria Bucur’s book, Birth of Democratic Citizenship. Women and Power in Modern Romania, co-authored with Mihaela Miroiu, has just been released with Indiana University Press.
Mirjam and Noam Zadoff's co-edited volume: Scholar and Kabbalist: The Life and work of Gershom Scholem was published earlier this month with Brill.
